If you’re thinking about buying a home, your credit score plays a huge role in what you qualify for~and at what interest rate.
The good news? You don’t always need years to see improvement. In many cases, small, strategic moves can make a noticeable difference in 30–90 days.
Here are the most effective (and safest) ways to improve your credit before applying for a mortgage.
This is one of the fastest ways to boost a credit score.
Try to keep credit card balances:
Below 30% of the limit
Ideally below 10%
Example:
If your card has a $1,000 limit:
Under $300 is good
Under $100 is even better
👉 Even if you can’t pay cards off completely, lowering balances can raise your score quickly.
Payment history is the largest factor in your credit score.
What helps:
Set up autopay for the minimum payment
Stay consistent
One late payment can drop a score 60–100 points, so consistency matters more than speed.
This surprises a lot of people.
Older accounts help your credit age
Closing cards can cause an instant score drop
👉 Even if you don’t use them, it’s usually best to keep old cards open.
If you’re planning to buy a home, avoid:
New credit cards
Furniture or appliance financing
Car loans
“0% interest” store offers
Each inquiry can lower your score and raise red flags during underwriting.
This is a simple win for many buyers.
What to do:
Call your current credit card companies
Ask for a credit limit increase
Confirm it’s a soft inquiry (not hard)
Higher limits = lower utilization = higher credit score.
In the right situation, this can help quickly.
It works best if:
The account is long-standing
The balance is low
Payment history is perfect
It’s with a trusted family member
⚠️ This should be used carefully and temporarily, with lender guidance.
This is very important:
Do not pay collections without guidance
Paying some collections can actually lower your score
Medical collections are treated differently
👉 Always consult a lender before touching collections.
These don’t always show up on credit blogs—but they matter:
Keep cash steady
Large, unexplained deposits can raise red flags.
Avoid job changes
Stability is key during underwriting.
Keep balances low until after closing
Even once you’re pre-approved.
