❄️ Extreme Cold Emergency Checklist

A 1‑Page Guide for Homes with Kids, Pets & Medical Needs

Keep this checklist handy during extreme cold weather. Preparation first. Calm, safe steps if power goes out.


🧊 BEFORE EXTREME COLD HITS

☐ Protect Your Home

  • Insulate exposed pipes (basement, crawl space, exterior walls)

  • Let faucets drip slowly during extreme cold

  • Open sink cabinets to allow warm air to circulate

  • Seal drafts with towels or weather stripping

  • Close garage doors and keep interior doors open


☐ Heating & Power Prep

  • Service furnace and replace filters

  • Set thermostat to a consistent temperature

  • Test carbon monoxide and smoke detectors

  • Have space heaters ready (tip‑over safety only, never unattended)


☐ Emergency Supplies (One Central Location)

For Everyone:

  • Flashlights and extra batteries

  • Portable phone chargers or power banks

  • Bottled water (1 gallon per person per day)

  • Non‑perishable food

  • Manual can opener

  • Extra blankets, sleeping bags, warm clothing

  • First‑aid kit

For Kids:

  • Extra formula, baby food, snacks

  • Diapers, wipes, medications

  • Comfort items (blanket, stuffed animal)

  • Board games, books, coloring supplies

For Pets:

  • Pet food and treats (3–5 days)

  • Extra water

  • Leash, carrier, litter, waste bags

  • Warm bedding or blankets

For Medical Needs:

  • Medications for several days

  • Backup batteries for medical devices

  • Printed emergency contacts and prescriptions


☐ Prepare Your Vehicle

  • Keep gas tank at least half full

  • Emergency kit: blankets, flashlight, snacks

  • Jumper cables and ice scraper

  • Windshield fluid rated for freezing temps


⚠️ IF YOU LOSE POWER

☐ Stay Warm Safely

  • Wear layers including socks and hats

  • Gather everyone in one room to conserve heat

  • Block drafts with towels or blankets

  • Never use grills, ovens, or generators indoors


☐ Prevent Frozen Pipes

  • Continue dripping faucets

  • If water stops, shut off the main water valve

  • Do not pour hot water directly on frozen pipes


☐ Food Safety

  • Keep fridge and freezer doors closed

  • Refrigerator food is safe for about 4 hours

  • Freezer food is safe 24–48 hours if unopened


☐ Generator Safety (If Applicable)

  • Use generators outdoors only

  • Keep far from windows and doors

  • Follow manufacturer instructions


☐ Check on Others

  • Elderly neighbors

  • Families with small children

  • Anyone with medical or mobility needs


🏡 AFTER POWER IS RESTORED

  • Check for frozen or burst pipes

  • Slowly raise indoor temperature

  • Reset appliances carefully

  • Restock emergency supplies
